I have heard of people going to Great Falls (Virginia and Maryland side) to view the falls, watch kayakers tackle the rapids and ofcourse rock climb!  So this Labor Day, we ventured out to Great Falls (Virginia side) to take the kids on a little nature hike.  My firs timpression of this place was "Wow--- you can't even tell that the crazy 495 beltway is only a few minutes away"  Tucked between DC, VA and Maryland is this beautiful body of water with paths, picnic areas and plenty of gorgeous land.  I know that the Great Falls are not that "great" and they certainly don't look like Niagara Falls- but they were impressive and the fact that its here in VA & MD is pretty cool.

There are 3 overlooks on the Virginia side of Great falls- the first overlook is not handicap accessible and you do have to climb some rock sto see the view- the climb isn't bad and lots of little kids were doing it.  The 2nd and 3rd overlooks was handicap accessible and easy for every to access and view the falls.

Great Falls had so many different trails so we decided to take a trail that took us to a few hidden overlooks and to our surprise- our little 5 year old Princess who enjoys wearing heels, nail polish, lip gloss and dresses took the hike in stride.  She was climbing rocks, going through the woods and enjoying herself.  We are so proud of her and you could tell that she was proud of herself when we reached the end of the trail.  The hidden overlooks were great because you could stop, replenish yourself with a little snack and water and just sit for a few minutes.  We witnessed many kayakers trying to brave the rapids and we saw lots of rock climbers- some with harnesses and some without harnesses!

There were running trails, horse trails, dog trails, family trails and just so many picnic tables with lots of families spending the day in the outdoors.Families brought their soccer balls, frisbees, blankets and bikes. You all definately have to visit- there are many trails that are easy, some that are dog friendly and family friendly too.  Pack a picnic and check it out. We can't wait for our next hike!
